- Decently priced semi-portable generator - Review by S van Scoyoc
Features Build Quality Ease of Use Value for Money
After a few moments of run in I put a heater on it and ran it at 50% load for an hour. It managed this without any trouble and it ran smoothly for the duration. The powersmart feature is a useful one and I can imagine that since my anticipated loads are about 1,000 watts it will allow the generator run as quiet as possible. As the load increases, the generator becomes quite loud, but not as loud as a frame mounted generator.
A bit of reality here though. This is not a Yamaha or Honda. It's not even in the same ballpark, so to speak. First, noise. The generator is much louder than the Yammies and Hondas and, to be fair, despite the db levels advertised online the sticker on the generator says 93db, which is pretty darned loud and, under a full load, you will not be having easy conversations anywhere nearby. It is quieter in person than it sounded on youtube videos and it is well damped. In spite of it all, for the price it's satisfactory.
Second, size. This is not a "suitcase" generator. It's more of an icebox generator! I was surprised by the bulk of it. It is a pretty big generator which makes the generous handles B&S designed into the casing really useful. I haven't seen such useful handles on any other mid-priced generator. In fact, it is much easier for two people lug this thing about but it is possible to get a secure, balanced grip on the handles on your own. Because of the bulk it is also pretty awkward to heave about, at about 25 kg.
It's easy to be critical of Chinese made products and, in particular, engines, but many good products come out of Chinese factories. My lawnmower seems to be a good example. My Parson outboard (2 of them) have been disappointing. We'll see about the generator.
In the end, my reasons for choosing the B&S are pretty simple. My boat is grey so it matches and the large carry handles suggest it will be easier to manoeuvre on docks and in and out of the boat. Otherwise, I suspect they are all pretty much the same until you get to the genuine Japanese brands. I am happy with this one. (Posted on 21/08/2015)
